The Rocky Horror Picture Show - Collector's Book Close Up #2

In today's blog, I'd like to review for you the Limited Cinedition of The Rocky Horror Picture Show by 20th Century Fox. The limited collector's book series was released in fall of 2010, the titles are meanwhile out of print and out of stock in most stores.

Please notice: There is no German audio track for the movie. You have to watch and listen to the original English voices. That is why I challanged myself, and you - my readers, to write this blog in English. Please be patient with my language skills.

           

Janet Weiss and Brad Majors visited a wedding and got engaged. On their way home, their car broke down and they found shelter "over at the Frankenstein place". The owner, Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry) - a "sweet transvestite", helds a party to celebrate the 'birth' of his creature Rocky, a muscular blonde man who ist brought to life for Frank's pleasure. The ceremony is interupted by Eddie (Meat Loaf), a biker and love interest of the servant Columbia, who gets killed by Frank N. Furter. The story gets even more twisted, when Dr. Everett von Scott shows up to reveal, that Frank actually is a transsexual alien.

If you think, the plot cannot get any crazier, than you have to imagine, that the whole flick is actually a musical. On Blu-ray, I had my first Rocky Horror experience and I was quite irritated with the missing German audio track, until I realized, that the movie contains a lot of musical elements, so I guess, you can hardly find a proper and entertaining translation. And with the help of subtitles, German or English, it was an enjoyable journey. 

  

The collector's book looks good, but not great. I am not completely satified with the cover material. The quality feels random. The book has the size of a regular amaray case and contains the blu-ray with the movie and lots of interesting supplements, a beautiful booklet showing nice pictures of the cast and a senitype film cell, a reproduction of a 35mm film frame. On the cover of the collector's book is a hologram of Frank N. Furter, playing tongue-in-cheek if you move the book before your eyes.

      

The blu-ray picture looks a bit aged. We see lots of nice high defintion moments, on the other hand a lot of moments are looking soft and are lacking in detail. The release offers a nice, but not flawless DTS-HD MA 7.1 audio track. In musical scenes, the audio is great and sounds perfect, in dialogue scenes the track sounds flat and weak. It seems like you are watching two different movies.

On the bottom line, the Rocky Horror Picture Show is pure fun and highly recommended, even if the Blu-ray presentation is not flawless. If you are not interested in the collector's book, a cheaper CineProject blu-ray is available.
