Die Hard director signs on to direct the action thriller Shrapnel

No doubt John McTiernan is hoping for a Die Hard style come-back after his last offering the Travolta turkey Basic, was so poorly received back in 2003. It sounds like he might have a chance with Shrapnel, based on the acclaimed script of Evan Daugherty which made the 2008 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays. The thriller follows two war veterans hunting each other in a violent game of cat and mouse.McTieran has been entangled in legal problems recently since giving false statements to law enforcement types in the a wiretapping case. However producer Anthony Rhulen seems to have faith that his director won't be behind bars himself by the tile filming starts. Financing is already in place, so it won't be long before we get some casting news.

Millennium Films and Corsan Pictures have announced production will start on January 16 for Killing Season (previously known as "Shrapnel"), starring Robert De Niro and JohnTravolta. Mark Steven Johnson (Ghost Rider, Daredevil) will direct from a script by Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman).

Killing Season is an action movie set in the Appalachian Mountains about an American military veteran (De Niro) who has retreated to a remote cabin in the woods. When a rare visitor, a European tourist (Travolta), appears on the scene, the two men strike up an unlikely friendship. But in fact the visitor is a former Serbian soldier bent on revenge. What follows is a tense, action packed battle across some of America's most forbidding landscape that proves the old adage: the purest form of war is one-on-one.

Nu Image/Millennium is taking the lead on international sales at the American Film Market this week, in consultation with Corsan.

"I've loved this project from the moment I read Evan Daughterty's remarkable script," said Corsan CEO Paul Breuls. "It's thrilling, imaginative, unexpected and dominated by two extraordinary characters on a collision course. I'm very pleased this film is moving into production and to be partnered with Avi Lerner and his team at Millennium."

"We're excited to be co-financing and co-producing this film with Corsan, and to be working again with RobertDeNiro and John Travolta," said Nu Image/Millennium topper Avi Lerner. "We've never seen these two great actors on screen together before, and we're excited to see what comes of the combination."

In Killing Season dreht sich alles um eine alte Fehde zweier Soldaten, die in den amerikanischen Appalachen ihren Höhepunkt finden soll: Dorthin hat es einen amerikanischen Militär-Veteranen (Robert de Niro) verschlagen, der sich in eine einsam gelegene Hütte zurückgezogen hat. Eines Tages trifft er dort auf einen europäischen Touristen (John Travolta) und zwischen beiden entwickelt sich in dieser Einsamkeit langsam eine ungewöhnlicheFreundschaft. Doch der vermeintliche Freund entpuppt sich schnell als lebender Alptraum, denn hinter der freundlichen Fassade verbirgt sich ein ehemaliger serbischer Soldat, der auf Rache sinnt. Was folgt ist ein unerbittlicher Kampf in einer ebenso unerbittlichen Umgebung - frei nach dem Motto: Die reinste Form des Krieges ist der Kampf Eins gegen Eins. Und dieser hat gerade begonnen.

Im Jahr 2006 stand McTiernan vor Gericht, weil er gegenüber dem FBI bewusst falsche Angaben gemacht haben soll: Die US-Bundespolizei untersuchte eine illegale Abhöraktion des Privatdetektivs Anthony Pellicano gegen den Filmproduzenten Charles Roven, die McTiernan in Auftrag gegeben haben soll. Im September 2007 wurde McTiernan dafür zu vier Monaten Haft und 100.000 Dollar Strafe verurteilt. Ein Berufungsgericht hob das Urteil 2008 auf, jedoch erweiterte die Staatsanwaltschaft die Klage und reichte sie im April 2009 wieder ein. Deswegen wurde er am 4. Oktober 2010 zu einem Jahr Haft und einer Geldstrafe von 100.000 Dollar (72.000 Euro) verurteilt. McTiernans Anwalt kündigte an, erneut gegen das Urteil vorzugehen
