Donnie Yen to play lead in Sleeping Dogs movie

Donnie Yen (Rogue One, Ip Man) is set to play the lead role in the upcoming film Sleeping Dogs based on the 2012 video game from Square Enix. Deadline reports that Yen is joining the film that will come to us from Neal Moritz’s (The Fate of the Furious) production company Original Film.

Yen will play an undercover cop in Hong Kong where the film will be set. This cop, Wei Shen, voiced by Will Yun Lee (Hawaii 5-O) in the video game, is on a mission to take down a powerful criminal organization, the Sun On Yee Triad. There will reportedly be lots of martial arts, racing and boat chases, much like the video game it’s based on. Yen is, of course, an accomplished martial artist. He played Chirrut Îmwe, an incredibly fast blind fighter in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He also played Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man in the film series about the man who trained Bruce Lee. He recently played Xiang in xXx: Return of Xander Cage.
Sleeping Dogs is an open world action-adventure game that came out for PlayStation 3, Windows and Xbox 360. It was developed by United Front Games and Square Enix London. In 2014, a remastered version called the Definitive Edition, was released for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. There was a spinoff called Triad Wars in development, though it didn’t end up happening.
