Julius Avery will director Overlord, a supernatural thriller set against D-Day’s Normandy invasion

Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot have today found a helmer for their upcoming WWII supernatural thriller Overlord. Variety reports that Julius Avery, best known for directing the A24 thriller Son of a Gun, will direct the film, based on an original idea by The Hunger Games screenwriter Billy Ray and Bad Robot’s own J.J. Abrams. Ray is providing the screenplay, which has been in the planning stages for nearly a decade. Most recently, The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith did a script polish.

Overlord, which will be produced by Abrams, is said to follow two paratroopers who, after being shot down over Normandy in the midst of the D-Day invasion, discover that a sinister Nazi experiment has given rise to an additional, supernatural evil.


According to today’s report in the trade, meetings are already underway in Hollywood to cast Overlord‘s two leads.


Prior to production on Overlord, Avery is set to direct The King of LA, Scott Free Productions‘ true tale of DEA corruption.


Last year, Bad Robot Productions released both 10 Cloverfield Lane and Star Trek Beyond through Paramount. The former, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr. and brought in more than $100 million at the worldwide box office. The latter, the third entry in the rebooted big screen Star Trek timeline, was directed by Justin Lin and pulled in more than $343 million worldwide.

Mit Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones), Dominic Applewhite (The King’s Speech), Pilou Asbaek (Game of Thrones), Iain de Caestecker (AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.), John Magaro (The Big Short), Mathilde Ollivier (The Misfortunes of Francois Jane) und Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo) konnten jetzt gleich mehrere Neuzugänge für die Bad Robot Produktion Overlord unter Vertrag genommen werden. Da J.J. Abrams (Star Trek) produziert, wird fleißig darüber spekuliert, ob der Film möglicherweise zum Cloverfield Universum gehören könnte.

Zwischen Cloverfield und 10 Cloverfield Lane ließ Paramount ganze acht Jahre ins Land ziehen. 2018 erhöht sich die Franchise-Ableger jetzt gleich doppelt, da neben God Particle jetzt auch Overlord als offizieller Teil der Reihe bestätigt werden konnte. Die Dreharbeiten wurden inzwischen erfolgreich abgeschlossen.

„Darüber zu sprechen, wie der nächste Film wird und was darin passiert, finde ich eher kontraproduktiv“, erklärt Produzent J.J. Abrams in einem aktuellen Interview. „Aber ich kann es kaum erwarten, dem Publikum Overlord zu zeigen. Regisseur Julius Avery hat verdammt gute Arbeit geleistet. Ich kann leider nicht ins Detail gehen, daher nur so viel: Es wird ein richtig verrückter Film“, versichert Abrams im selben Atemzug.

Bislang war man allgemein davon ausgegangen, dass es sich bei dem kommenden Weltkriegs-Albtraum Overlord um einen weiteren Film innerhalb des Cloverfield-Universums handeln würde, der ähnlich wie The Cloverfield Paradox oder 10 Cloverfield Lane eher indirekt mit dem Found Footage-Original von 2008 verbunden ist. Doch jetzt kam ans Licht: Dem ist gar nicht so! Laut J.J. Abrams ist Overlord „etwas vollkommen Eigenständiges, unser erster Film mit R-Rating und garantiert kein geheimer Cloverfield-Ableger.“
