The Stuff Dreams Are Made
Of – Collector Brings the Magic of Hollywood to
Pakistan
Collector and superhero enthusiast, Aamir Sajjad, has brought the
magic of Hollywood and American pop culture to Pakistan in an
exhibition titled
‘The Stuff Dreams Are Made
Of’, held at the Indus Valley School of Arts and Architecture
gallery in Karachi. On display are nearly 60 pieces from Sideshow,
WETA, Hot Toys and more.
“This is a kind of art form and needs to be presented,” said
Sajjad, who has been collecting statues for the past seven years,
and curated the gallery from his private collection of over 500
pieces.
The Dean of Design at IVS, Shahnaz Ismail, told the
Tribune that life in Karachi
was very uncertain, referring to ongoing unrest and recent bomb
blast. “Exhibitions like these allow you to momentarily escape into
a fantasy land. The objective of the exhibition is to bring the
magic back in people’s lives which are so full of violence.”
In addition to Lollipop and Ladu’s wonderful video (above),
Dawn.com also reported fan
reactions to the show. Danial Ali Nanjiani, 8, kept coming back to
Batman’s car, asking his dad to take pictures from every angle.
“But my favorite characters are from Star Wars,” he added, pointing
towards the Jedi master, Yoda.
At the other end of the room, Abdul Fahad, 24, said that through
this exhibition many lesser known artists will be encouraged to
showcase their work too. “My friend, Khurram Ali, made a statue of
Lion-O from ThunderCats and showcased it at the annual Comic-Con
held in San Diego.”
With the collectibles garnering so much praise and appreciation,
Sajjad is preparing to produce and star in Pakistan’s first
superhero movie,
Nation Awakes. The
movie will premiere a Pakistani superhero who attempts to bring
people from all countries and races together on one platform. “As a
country, we have yet to define our national identity,” said Sajjad.
“But defining our national hero is an important part of that
process.”
‘The Stuff Dreams Are Made
Of’ will be on display at IVS through March 30.
